GRAMMY-nominated producer Mat Zo is back with a brand new artist album ‘Illusion Of Depth.’ This is the London-born, L.A.-based producer’s third artist LP.
Prepare for another helter-skelter trip through a pick-n’-mix of styles. ‘Illusion Of Depth’ begins with the brash ‘In Media Res’. Next, it’s Zo’s ode to 90’s warehouse techno: ‘The Next Chapter’ featuring legendary jungle/D&B MC GQ. Then, all of a sudden, ‘Love Songs’ and some French, filter house.

“I started working on Illusion of Depth because I wanted to make a body of work that was cohesive. I’m usually known for being all over the place, but I wanted to make an album that had unifying qualities. In this case, partly it’s the tempo. Everything on the album is in the 124-128 bpm range, but within that constraint, I still managed to be all over the place stylistically. There’s also a lot more live/non-digital elements on this album than my previous work. I was getting really tired of how clean everything is in this corner of dance music. Above all else, I wanted to make an album with grit, texture, and attitude. I wanted to make a fuck you statement to the safe, sugary, fluffy world of a post-EDM trance” -Mat Zo

The album introduces Atlanta-based Olan, a singer, and producer that Mat has worked with for a number of years. There’s a nod to classic rave culture and the Chemical Brothers with her vocals on ‘Problems’ while the closing track ‘Paralysis’ is a cinematic rock crescendo.

“A big part of the conception of the album came from working with Olan. She’s a highly skilled singer, songwriter, and producer and we’ve known each other for years. We had been in the studio working on a bunch of material before this, and that helped us grow a common musical identity. When it came to writing this album we were already comfortable with each other. This allowed the songs on the album, to be honest, opposed to a bunch of toplines plastered on top of already formed tracks. Every song we wrote together is personal, sincere, and holds a lot of meaning for both of us,” Zo continues.

Mat Zo broke onto the scene in 2008 and has been causing an uproar ever since. In the early naughties, he penned Anjunabeats classics like ‘The Lost’ and ‘Synapse Dynamics’ which were far ahead of their time. They were followed by the likes of ‘Superman’, ‘The Sky’, and ‘Rebound’ (with Arty). He pushed the Anjunabeats sound to the mainstage, racking up spins from Pete Tong, Axwell, and Armin van Buuren.

It was his GRAMMY-nominated debut album ‘Damage Control’ that fully showcased Mat’s avant-garde approach in 2013. Featuring break-out hit ‘Easy’ with close friend Porter Robinson, the track took Mat mainstream: a Radio 1 A-List addition, Sirius XM BPM listing, a #1 Billboard Heatseeking record, an Essential Mix of the year nomination, and, ultimately, a GRAMMY nom for the best electronic album.

Since then, Mat has grown his own stable. Self-releasing his second LP in 2016, ‘Self Assemble’, via Mad Zoo, Mat’s imprint nurtured a new generation of eclectic, genre-agnostic creators.

He’s stayed close with Anjunabeats through that time, joining Above & Beyond for shows at Madison Square Garden and Huntington Beach, and Anjunabeats label shows all throughout North America. With over a decade of groundbreaking records under his belt, Mat’s legion of devoted fans have flocked to see him live at festivals internationally as well, including London’s Hospitality in the Park, SoCal’s Nocturnal Wonderland, Holy Ship, Sunset Music Festival, and Beyond Wonderland Mexico. Zo has also performed at esteemed venues like the Hollywood Palladium for a B2B with Kill the Noise, Red Rocks (rescheduled in 2021 to play with Galantis), New York’s Webster Hall, and Chicago’s Aragon Ballroom.

Now in quarantine, Zo has worked on producing his own immersive digital events. October 23 and 24 marks the start of the Mad Zoo Events’ Stratosfest Minecraft Festival. The virtual event will feature headlining trance sets from Above & Beyond, ATTLAS, Darude, Ferry Corsten, Gabriel & Dresden, Hellbound, ilan Bluestone, Mat Zo, No Mana, Olan, Qrion, and Tritonal. • Giuseppe Ottaviani & Christian Burns Join Forces On ‘Closer’ giuseppe-ottaviani-christian-burns-closer-oz-edm-feature

After August’s ‘Melody’ with Sarah de Warren, Giuseppe Ottaviani delivers ‘Horizon’s [Part 2]’ another single-worded spellbinder with ‘Closer’. One of the hallmarks of the Italian’s current album project has been pinpointing and spotlighting vocal talent from outside the trance & progressive lanes. ‘Closer’ however is its notable exception. It reteams Giuseppe with a singer-songwriter whose talents have made him one of the A-list’s most sought after. As such, it’s not the first time Giuseppe and Christian Burns’ paths have crossed (‘Brightheart’ from the ‘Alma’ album laying claim to that). In contrast to ‘Brightheart’, but in keeping with the textural sonics of ‘Horizons’ deeper dive, ‘Closer’ brings a collaboration more meditatively and transcendentally tipped in nature. Production-wise, Giuseppe prioritises atmosphere and vision over amp and elevation. His synths maintain a Moog-ish air throughout and Giuseppe weaves any number of other studio intricacies in, supplying it the richest of soundscapes. Working on the principle of less being more, Christian bakes ether and emotion into every syllable of his song. Wistful, while never despondent, yet not traditionally uplifting either, his words rest unitedly on the cusp of hopeful. Tracked every step by Giuseppe’s empathetic production, honest-to-goodness musical alchemy takes place. ‘Horizons [Part 2]’ moves another step closer, as Giuseppe Ottaviani & Christian Burns’ stunning ‘Closer’ collaboration touches down on all good streaming and sales platforms today.

    • Above & Beyond and Marty Longstaff Reunite on ‘Chains’ above-and-beyond-flow-state-oz-edm-2019

Premiered during the band’s Group Therapy 450 celebration at The Drumsheds London last September, ‘Chains’ is Above & Beyond’s second single of 2022 with singer Marty Longstaff and follows the release of ‘Gratitude’ earlier this year. ‘Chains’ has been a mainstay in Above & Beyond’s sets over the past year, played extensively during their 70,000-ticket Anjunafamily Reunion Tour last winter, plus two sold-out Amsterdam shows, Anjunabeats Europe in Poland, Tomorrowland, and more. ‘Chains’ was one of two Above & Beyond original productions to appear on their Anjunabeats Volume 16 compilation, alongside ‘Projection’. More commonly found performing under the moniker The Lake Poets, Marty Longstaff rose to prominence with the moving acoustic ballad ‘Shipyards’. The song accompanies the opening credits to the sleeper hit Netflix documentary, ’Sunderland ’Till I Die’. The Sunderland singer-songwriter is the voice of Above & Beyond’s ‘Tightrope’, ‘Flying By Candlelight’ and ‘Gratitude’. “‘Jump and the net will appear,’ a fleeting remark from a colleague of Tony’s at Warner Records has always percolated during songwriting. With the uncertainty of the last few years, it reared its head again and ‘Chains’ was born. Marty’s tones fit the track perfectly, reminding us that a step into the unknown, might just be putting your best foot forward.” – Above & Beyond Above & Beyond’s extensive touring schedule rolls throughout summer 2022 and into autumn. Their Group Therapy Weekender London festival takes place at Dockyards London in September, with a sold-out Los Angeles show to mark Group Therapy 500 and appearances at Creamfields, EDC Orlando, EH1 Festival, and more also in the diary. • Emma Hewitt and Markus Schulz Join Forces On ‘Into My Arms’ emma-hewitt-into-my-arms-markus-schulz-oz-edm-2022-feature

Aussie superstar Emma Hewitt collaborates with Markus Schulz on club floor translation of new single “Into My Arms.” When we dropped the Original and nowifi Remix of Emma Hewitt’s return, ‘Into My Arms’, into your system earlier in the month, we promised you an organically emerging release. Well, that evolution continues today, as ‘Into My Arms’ adds heavyweight Markus Schulz to its cast list. Schulz has given ‘Into My Arms’ its first club floor translation, and one that brilliantly equalizes Emma’s bittersweet evocations with an uplift that knows little (if any!) bounds. Courtesy of its official video which premieres today, Emma & Markus’ collaboration has also been lent a stunning visual dimension. Shot on the wide-open expanses of California’s famed Salton Sea, its free-rein sensibility brilliantly echoes the newly elevated tone of ‘Into My Arms’. On the occasion of the partnership, Emma took some time to share insights into the writing & composition of ‘Into My Arms’. She says, “When first writing this song – as I so often have been over the years – I was separated from many loved ones in other parts of the world. As the time-and-distance gap grew larger, I began to wonder when, or even if, I would reunite with some of those people in this lifetime. Perhaps they will only be dreamt of for the rest of this journey, but I know I will visit them often in my memories.” Few voices are as instantly recognizable as that of Emma Hewitt. From her quiet coastal-town beginnings as an acoustic singer/songwriter to packed clubs and some of the largest electronic and dance festival stages in the world, her career has spanned over a decade and has included Billboard #1’s, IDMA and International Songwriter Awards, and collaborations with some of electronic music’s most notable producers. The next chapter of Emma Hewitt’s evolution sees her return to her singer/songwriter roots and 80’s tinged indie influences on a self-produced full-length solo album set to be released on Black Hole Recordings later this year. Blending Emma’s beautifully disarming innermost with a production that’ll land at the very heart of prime-time floors, the seismic and ethereal Emma Hewitt x Markus Schulz’s ‘Into My Arms’ comes to sales and streaming platforms today. • Anjunabeats Announce Long Awaited Volume 16 Compilation anjunabeats-volume-16-oz-edm-feature-2022

Anjunabeats Volume 16 Mixed By Above & Beyond. GRAMMY-nominated electronic trio Above & Beyond presents the 16th edition of the iconic Volume series, arriving July 22 on their Anjunabeats imprint. Featuring 33 tracks over two discs, Anjunabeats Volume 16 features exclusive new music from 30+ artists, both fresh and familiar to Anjunabeats fans. Sketched on the road and in Jono, Tony, and Paavo’s London studio over the past year, this new mixed compilation showcases the direction of Anjunabeats over the next 18 months. Label stalwarts ilan Bluestone, Andrew Bayer, Gabriel & Dresden, Genix, Oliver Smith, Sunny Lax, and Maor Levi all contribute. Ilan’s first outing after the release of his album ‘Impulse’ is an exquisite rolling groover with BT, ‘Run’. Andrew Bayer returns with not one but two albums this summer, each side reflecting the ‘Duality’ of his art – ‘On Tape’ is Bayer’s contribution to Volume 16 and it demands to be played as loud as possible. Some experienced veterans make their Anjuna debut: there’s a contribution from Conjure One and Sinéad O’Connor (infamous for ‘Tears From The Moon’), while legendary house-head Fred Falke is on remix duty, adding an extra French touch to Mat Zo and OLAN’s ‘Colours’ from Mat’s ‘Illusion of Depth’ album. Five graduates of the Rising EP series also feature, plus a handful of up-and-comers including ANUQRAM, anamē, and Simon Gregory. The captivating Kasablanca also have their first Volume outing, fresh off their stunning ‘Immunity EP’ and a remix of Above & Beyond’s ‘Black Room Boy’. And that brings the story back to A&B’s Hello Studios in Bermondsey. Four of the records debuted at ABGT450 last year and feature on Volume 16, although two now take an entirely different direction. ‘Screwdriver’ has received a deeper treatment from Jono, while Oliver Smith reworks ‘Gratitude’. ‘Projection’, an ID from their ABGT450 set, has been tweaked and tightened on the road over the last few months, as has ‘Chains’ featuring Marty Longstaff. Plus, two unforeseen excursions are pre-pandemic: there’s a contribution from Jono’s brand new project with Darren Tate, JODA (retouched by PROFF), and Paavo’s resurrected P.O.S alias. “We hope you enjoy Anjunabeats Volume 16 as much as we do. More so than recent editions, both CDs feel like self-contained journeys, with CD1 perhaps best for an afternoon session and CD2 for the nightclub. It’s a testament to our ever-expanding and talented community of artists that we’re able to explore so many different sounds on this compilation album. Most of all it’s full of the warmth and positivity you find in this family, and we hope to meet you at a show sometime very soon.” – Above & Beyond ‘Anjunabeats Volume 16, mixed By Above & Beyond,’ is available on July 22. A limited-edition run of physical CD copies and accompanying art print is available to pre-order from the Anjuna Music Store. Anjunabeats Volume 16 Tracklist Disc 1 Jordin Post feat.
