5 Must See Acts at Beyond The Valley 2024

Fish56Octagon

Fish56Octagon

Fish56Octagon, the 44-year-old DJ and influencer, has become this year’s most unexpected breakout star in electronic music. What began as a quirky social media pivot has quickly evolved into a phenomenon, earning him over 300,000 followers on TikTok and nearly half a million on Instagram.

Initially known for automotive advice, Fish56Octagon’s account took a sharp turn six months ago when he started sharing videos of himself spinning decades-old rave vinyl in everyday settings. Whether playing happy hardcore in the family car or enjoying breakfast to psytrance, his content is an intriguing blend of music journalism and genuine enthusiasm for dance music. Fish’s deep knowledge and passion for the genre shine through as he delves into the history and significance of obscure rave tracks, offering informed recommendations reminiscent of a well-meaning record shop guy.

Despite his newfound fame, DJing remains a hobby for Fish, who has worked in marketing across various sectors since his student days. His down-to-earth approach is evident in his distinctive style—often appearing in videos wearing a dressing gown and munching on a dry Weetabix. What might seem like a gimmick is simply a reflection of his morning routine, as he juggles content creation with his nine-to-five job.

Fish’s authenticity has resonated with audiences, leading to bookings at some of Europe’s top clubs and festivals, including multiple sets in Ibiza and a spot at Glastonbury. His rise to prominence is driven by his love for the music, not by a desire for fame. “There was never any strategy behind it,” he says. “I’ve always just made the content that I thought was entertaining and fun.”

As Fish56Octagon continues to gain traction, his story serves as an inspiring reminder that passion and authenticity can lead to success, even in the most unexpected ways.

KI/KI

KI/KI

From Amsterdam’s fertile underground to techno temples around the world, KI/KI is at the forefront of a new rave resurrection. Shaped by the time-tried fundamentals of trance, acid and techno, she subtly constructs her own signature: a sound realm that’s fast but dreamlike, futuristic but nostalgic, severe but – at all times – euphoric.

Starting out as a resident DJ at queer stronghold Spielraum back in 2018, KI/KI has rapidly evolved into a nightlife bastion of her own. In the past years she’s made a mark with unforgettable all-nighters, curating her own ‘KI/KI invites’ series, upsurging Boiler Room views, and striking dance floors from Berghain to Bassiani, from Awakenings to Pitch Music & Arts.

As an artist, collaboration and community are essential to KI/KI’s craft. While festival stages and warehouses have become her second home, her heart still beats the loudest for the dark and intimate fringes of nightlife. Beyond music, this artistry bleeds into all forms of collaboration; resulting in, among others, her ‘not for sleeping’ project with Amsterdam fashion collective The New Originals.

In 2022, KI/KI established the label slash: a platform that unites the buried treasures of her musical heroes, the work of like-minded emerging producers and – not to forget – her own releases. With production taking up a bigger and bigger role in her artistry, KI/KI revealed her first live show in the summer of ’22 as the official closing of Draaimolen Festival.

Tinlicker

Tinlicker

Tinlicker is a Dutch electronic music act formed in 2013, consisting of Micha Heyboer (Drums, Keys) and Jordi van Achthoven (Drums, Keys).

The name ‘Tinlicker’ comes from circuit bending, which is the creative, chance-based customization of the circuits within electronic devices to create new musical or visual instruments and sound generators. While you have your hands full with musical instruments you have to ‘lick the tin’ in order to make things work.

Tinlicker released their first studio album ‘This Is Not Our Universe’ in 2019. The album was championed by media including Billboard, DJ Mag, BBC Radio 1 and SiriusXM. A slew of acclaimed EPs and singles followed, including remixes for alt-J, Kosheen and deadmau5, their Beatport #1 edit of Robert Miles’ ‘Children’ and their Gold & Platinum awarded song ‘Because You Move Me’ together with Helsloot.

With their second album released in 2022 called ‘In Another Lifetime’ – Tinlicker presents a brand new chapter as they demonstrate their vast personal and artistic growth. Including songs with Nathan Nicholson (The Boxer Rebellion), Jamie Irrepressible (Röyksopp) and ‘Rebirth’ together with Hero Baldwin. Also in 2022 their tune ‘Hypnotised’ was the official opening song of Tesla’s nex factory in Texas and their song ‘Because You Move Me’ reached Platinum in Germany, Triple Platinum in Switzerland, Triple gold in Austria, Platinum in France, Gold in Canada and Gold in their home country The Netherlands.

DJ Boring

DJ Boring

Tristan Hallis, professionally known as DJ Boring, is an Australian-born, London-based producer whose house music spans a wide emotional spectrum, from melancholy to euphoric. Hallis rose from obscurity to international acclaim with the unexpected viral success of his 2016 track “Winona.” Initially linked to the lo-fi house movement, DJ Boring has since evolved his sound, incorporating elements of trance and techno into his polished productions, as evidenced in releases like Like Water (2020) and Beautiful Strangers (2023). His first mix album, an entry in the prestigious DJ-Kicks series, was released in 2024.

Hallis began releasing music as DJ Boring around 2013, but it wasn’t until the release of “Winona” in 2016 that he gained widespread recognition. The track, noted for its atmospheric synth pads, distinctive bass, and a poignant sample of Winona Ryder reflecting on her experiences in Hollywood, was uploaded to YouTube in late September of that year. It rapidly gained hundreds of thousands of views, coinciding with the surge in popularity of Ryder’s starring role in the series Stranger Things. The track’s success attracted the attention of journalists, who grouped Hallis with other ironically named, ’90s-inspired producers such as Ross from Friends and DJ Seinfeld, dubbing them as part of the “lo-fi house” wave. Despite mixed reactions, “Winona” garnered a dedicated following and was released on vinyl by E-Beamz at the end of the year.

Following the success of “Winona,” DJ Boring became a highly sought-after DJ and live performer, playing at leading clubs and festivals worldwide. In 2017, he released several EPs, including Sunday Avenue (LPH White), Different Dates (Lost Palms), and Hidden Messages (E-Beamz). Collaborations followed, including 2018’s Wasted Years of Pumping Iron with Frits Wentink and Vienna 001 with Stanley Schmidt. His solo EP For Tahn was released on Shall Not Fade the same year. DJ Boring’s talent for remixing was showcased with reworks of tracks by Jacques Renault and Lee “Scratch” Perry in 2019. His 2020 EP Like Water on Ninja Tune’s Technicolour imprint further solidified his reputation. Continuing his upward trajectory, the EP Beautiful Strangers was released on Running Back in 2023, and his highly anticipated edition of !K7’s DJ-Kicks series arrived in 2024, featuring one of his most energetic tracks, “You Luv Me.”

FISHER

Fisher

Australian tech-house power-force Paul Fisher (aka Fisher) brings a sense of carefree fun to his productions, which strip away pretenses to focus on serving the dancefloor. He came to the public’s attention in 2018 with his brassy single “Losing It,” which was certified platinum in his home country and was nominated for a Grammy. The follow-up “You Little Beauty” was also a success, and Fisher continued releasing upbeat club material such as 2021’s “Just Feels Tight,” 2022’s “It’s a Killa,” and 2023’s “Take It Off.”

Fisher was born and raised on the Gold Coast of Australia, where he pursued a career as a professional surfer for many years. The lifestyle came with its fair share of parties, incentivizing Fisher to take up DJing in 2005, although it wouldn’t be until 2011 that he turned his hand to production. His initial tracks were released as part of Cut Snake alongside fellow producer and surfer Leigh Sedley. Fisher eventually went solo in 2017, going on to issue a string of singles such as “Ya Kidding,” “Stop It,” and “Ya Didn’t,” all on Dirtybird. In 2018, he released his breakout track, “Losing It,” this time via Catch & Release. The song went to number one on the Australian and American club charts, and was certified gold or platinum in Australia, Italy, Germany, and the U.K. It was also nominated for Best Dance Recording at the 61st Annual Grammy Awards.
