Grammy-Nominated film composer, technologist, multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and trance music icon BT releases his new double single ‘1AM in Paris (with Matt Fax)’ / ‘The War (with Iraina Mancini)’ on Black Hole Recordings.

The double single showcase just a small fraction of what’s in store for BT’s forthcoming artist album, due soon. More info on that soon, but for now let’s dig into these singles.  ‘1AM In Paris’ is a progressive masterpiece, crafted in collaboration with Matt Fax. The song shines as brightly as the city of lights, radiating a peak time energy that’s sorely been missed during these months on lockdown. On the flip side, ‘The War (with Iraina Mancini)’ brings BT’s classic breakbeat sound back to the forefront. A treat for the producer junkie’s amongst us, the track showcases the wonders of Stutter Edit by glitching out this beautiful ballad into an all-out breakbeat/drum n’ bass assault on the speakers. Hearing is believing.

“‘1AM In Paris’ is a collaboration with Matt Fax. We wrote this quickly kicking ideas back and forth via Skype and email. Like several of the other songs from the record, I pulled this up on my console and mixed it live to disk (like mixing live to tape back in the day). I’m throwing sounds into tape delays and reverbs, feeding the console back on itself using a looped aux input, and many other things (including volume automation live) you can only do on a console. We owe so much to the dub music pioneers like King Tubby and later pioneers (a real inspiration to me) like Adrian Sherwood from Tackhead Sound System and Coldcut. I use these techniques of live mixing all the time” – BT

He adds, “‘The War’ started life as a super rough, piano, and vocal demo from Iraina Mancini, Si Hulbert, and Paul Harris from Dirty Vegas. There is so much going on in here it’s hard to figure out where to start. This is one of the most complicated pieces (sound design, musically, and arrangement) on the whole album. The first self-imposed marching order was: How do I make this go from something that sounds like a full live band to angular/esoteric glitch to trap to drum and bass and back? I divided the song into distinct versions 1. Live band 2. Trap/bass 3.Drum and Bass and 4. IDM. I pretty much did 4 fully formed versions of the song (and a big intro/sound design piece) and shoehorned all these into a final working version of the song.”

    • Saudi’s Top Female DJ Cosmicat Releases Debut Vocal Underground Single “Toxic Romance” Cosmicat-toxic-romance-2021-oz-edm

Saudi Arabia’s first and leading female DJ and producer Cosmicat makes her stunning debut with the first-ever single “Toxic Romance,” introducing herself to the global market as a sultry underground queen with both dancefloor and emotive potential. The track uses big-room synths and a rumbling, techno-influenced bassline to contrast exquisitely with her own feathery vocals; in this way, Cosmicat creates a soundscape that is both bold and delicate, personifying her own identity as a female artist who is trailblazing the electronic music scene in a culture that has traditionally forbid women from making any style of music. “Toxic Romance” is only the beginning for Cosmicat, so stay tuned to see what’s next as she establishes herself among electronic’s most exciting rising artists. “When I was working on ‘Toxic Romance,’ all I had on my mind was that I wanted to create the sound I love. It got me romanticizing about my relationship with it, as it’s a human being; how it was there for me every time I needed it or how I always come around to seek and chase it. On the sonic level, I wanted to add a big-sounding synth to make the track sound bold and highlight how synthesizers and electronic music can coexist with gentle whispering and my own vocals. I believe this makes ‘Toxic Romance’ sounding delicate and personal, while still being dancefloor-friendly.” – Cosmicat As she rises from the underground, the world is ready to be introduced to Nouf Sufyani – better known as Cosmicat – as the first and leading Saudi female DJ & producer in the electronic scene. Born and raised in Jeddah, Cosmicat always had a strong passion for music in a world where it was considered taboo; there were limited record and music equipment stores and no live performances. Cultural protocol meant that she had to keep her passion a secret, so Cosmicat worked toward the more realistic 9-5 career but never gave up on her dream of producing. She became a “bedroom DJ” and taught herself everything she needed to know about producing in private. In 2019 she performed at the first music festival in Saudi Arabia – MDLBEAST’s Soundstorm (which was also the biggest in the Middle East). Her reach quickly expanded to Bahrain, Lebanon, Kuwait, United Arab Emirates, where she performed, and now she’s gearing up for the release of her debut original single. I believe that Nouf is a perfect example showing that it’s important to be persistent and take the chance whenever it arises. Currently, there are more female DJs in Saudi Arabia who support and empower one another, with Cosmicat being the first/leading one, paving the way for other Saudi female DJs. She also hosts her own TV show. Privately she’s a cat lady (hence the artist’s name). Her personal favorites are Solomun, Peggy Gou, and Jamie Jones. Article image by Khaled Nadershah

    • Motez Releases Hypnotic Dance Track ‘Give Me Space’, Featuring The Kite String Tangle motez-give-me-space-oz-edm-2021-feature

Motez collaborates with The Kite String Tangle for an euphoric electronic record, ‘Give Me Space’, out now on Sweat It Out. Motez exhibits his vast musical knowledge by incorporating an array of genres and combining various styles of electronic music with classical elements. ‘Give Me Space’ makes clever use of house claps, classical piano arpeggios, and fast-paced dance and techno nuances. The release showcases The Kite String Tangle’s enticing vocals, while lyrically the song is about needing time in life to figure things out. Motez discusses why he wanted to work with The Kite String Tangle and the meaning behind the track, “I’ve been a big fan of The Kite String Tangle since his first release; I really connect with his music and his work ethic. ‘Give Me Space’ was the result of me wanting to mix his beautiful voice with my take on 80s inspired dance music, something that I have been listening to a lot lately. Think lots of chorus effects, lots of arpeggios and big, gated snares. Thematically, it’s a song about wanting space to figure out things in life. I felt like this was quite on point for me after our world was turned upside down over the last year. However, I was able to hone in on what I really want creatively and get back to what I truly loved about making music.” Cementing himself as a leading electronic producer in Australia, Motez has won over fans with his gold accredited record ‘The Future feat. Antony & Cleopatra’ as well as dance-floor favourite ‘Down Like This feat. Tkay Maidza’. While more recently, the Adelaide via Baghdad producer has released dynamic electronic records such as, ‘Where Have You Been’, and ‘Give Your Heart Away’ both of which scored support from triple j, Kiss FM (UK) and KCRW (US). In 2020, Motez also showcased a different side of his sound with the release of ‘Soulitude’, an EP created during isolation, designed to bring his fans a sense of serenity and tranquillity throughout the trying time. The EP took Motez to win best release, best music video and best electronic artist at the 2020 South Australian music awards. Outside of producing his own work, Motez has created official remixes for the likes of Goldlink, Disclosure and Ellie Goulding, earning him praise from dance icons such as Destructo, Justin Martin, Diplo and Flume. ‘Give Me Space feat. The Kite String Tangle’ is out now via Sweat It Out.

Shockone & Lee Mvtthews team up on uplifting new dnb heavy hitter ‘thinkin about’ + announce AU/NZ Dark Machine Records warehouse tour . Perth based DnB master ShockOne has returned following recent hit ‘Follow Me’ which saw the artist continue to push the boundaries for the bass music scene. On this new track ‘Thinkin About’, ShockOne has teamed up with NZ music legends Lee Mvtthews to deliver an inspiring uptempo dance track with a fiery DnB bed. The track combines an ethereal vocal topline with classic club music elements including a huge bass line and textural drum beat that pushes the song into the mainstream with an infectious energy that is bursting at the seams. This collaboration sees both artists use their impressive experience and ability in creating dynamic bass focused music to deliver an instant classic in ‘Thinkin About’. Both being signed to the ShockOne founded Dark Machine Records, this collaboration is meant to be and the song speaks for itself in terms of musical synchronicity and likeminded artistry. On the collaboration ShockOne shares, “‘Thinkin About’ was a really fun track to work on with Lee Mvtthews. It’s our first collaborative effort and I’m stoked with how it came out. I feel like this song really captures that feeling of hedonism and reckless abandon when you’re out at a rave with mates. I hope the audience feels the same way!” Graham and Tom from Lee Mvtthews further share, “when Karl (ShockOne) sent us over the idea, there was nothing to think about, this was a no-brainer. It had all the elements of a great track, so we came in and connected the dots. With production reminiscent of RÜFÜS DU SOL, Kanine, and Flume, it’s the perfect blend of rave and radio. ‘The vocals were initially written for another track, so to us, it kind of felt like a remix, and sometimes there’s a magic in remixes seldom found in an original piece of work. This was a unique experience for us writing it and we hope it feels the same when listening to it.” ShockOne has been making waves in the dance and electronic music scene for the past decade with his 2013 debut album ‘Universus’ charting in the UK and New Zealand as well as landing at #1 in the ARIA album charts. After this success and touring extensively across Europe as well as remixing singles for iconic artists such as DJ Snake, Dillon Francis, NGHTMRE & What So Not, the talented producer has gone on to start his own label Dark Machine Records. This label was formed to help promote the extensive bass music scene across the region. In late 2020, ShockOne dropped hit single ‘Follow Me’ which was added to rotation on triple j, clocked over 6 million streams across platforms and appeared in the top 20 on the Shazam chart here in Australia. Lee Mvtthews are one of the biggest dance/electronic acts out of New Zealand / Aotearoa currently with a reputation for infectious, energetic drum and bass music. The pair have gone from strength to strength winning ‘Best Artist’ 3 years running at the George FM awards as well as ‘Best Electronic Artist’ at the Aotearoa Music Awards in 2020.  Across their discography the duo have amassed over 25 million streams with tracks like ‘Takeover’ reaching #17 on the Apple Music charts and #77 on Spotify Global charts. • Koven Release New Single ‘Take It Away’ koven-take-it-away-oz-edm-feature

Koven’s rise just before the pandemic took hold a contemporary story of a duo’s dedication to their craft, which can be seen through both an electric live presence and also the sheer quality of their releases. These are elements which they never pulled the brakes on during lockdown; their work ethic is second to none, shown in the creation of their virtual reality club space as well as a number of phenomenal live sets which brought Katie Koven into fan’s living rooms. Although having re-kickstarted a jam packed touring schedule (including dates in Europe, New Zealand, Australia and North America), on top of dropping several releases in its lead up on UKF and NCS, now Koven have returned to Monstercat following the mammoth success of their album ‘Butterfly Effect’ which premiered on the label. It’s a move that sees them come full-circle, in a similar dynamic to their recent set at Belgium’s Rampage festival in March, the groundbreaking show which brought their beloved ‘Butterfly Effect’ to tens of thousands. “Take It Away” is the brand new single from Max and Katie, with Max sitting in the production booth and Katie lending her award-winning vocal prowess to the mix. Featuring the same depth which is notable within the entirety of Koven’s catalog, it’s heartbreak hidden in the high-energy drums, recounting what it’s like to let go of a relationship for fear of the void that follows. It takes its listener once more into their emotive landscapes which many have become familiar with. Something which is apparent at Koven’s shows, when Katie takes the mic and inspires crowds to follow their lyrics word for word. Adding to the record’s epicness, it also features the ‘Parallax Orchestra’, the same group behind the Eminem and Clean Bandit shows at Wembley Arena, as well as Bring Me The Horizon and Architects UK #1 albums. A fact adding to its musicality and already the pairs impressive profile. Max shares, “We started the EP at Middle Farm Studios in July 2021 and “Take It Away” was actually the first track we wrote, so it made sense to start here with the releases too. We then got a knock on the door of the studio and it was my old music theory tutor who was in recording with another band. He’s been doing all the string arrangements for Bring Me The Horizon, Architects, and others, so the strings you can hear on this record were arranged by him and recorded by the Parallax Orchestra!” Katie adds, “I’m so excited for this to be our first single back after not releasing anything since last year. I think it’s something quite different for us but really special. It’s such a pretty track, it’s heartbreaking but also hopeful. I hope people connect with it the way we have.” The softly spoken intro carried through by Katie, with its orchestral undertones, draws you into the record’s intense energy as the record kicks into play. It’s one more certified mainstage anthem from Koven, as the summer season begins. With a stacked list of headline shows and festival dates forthcoming for Koven, EDC (USA), Love Saves The Day (UK), Tomorrowland (BE), as well as a full package of music in the pipeline, the duo are staying true to what made them stand out, with their success a testament to their authenticity. 2022 is a new chapter for Koven, but they’re still following the same explosive ascent.
