Having built a career on churning out anthems, Simon Patterson continues to knock back the trance community with his irrepressible approach to almost every subgenre in the book. He’s sitting on another winner with “Vapour Trail,” which shows him linking back up with songwriting wizard Danny Wright on a highly combustive tech trance cut that maxes out on volatility. The chemistry between the two parties is impossible to deny, as they collectively tip the scales on vocal-driven productions with a jaw-locking edge.
Patterson recently took time with Sam Yu of Insomniac to discuss the process of creating yet another masterpiece and what’s in store for the future.
Do you mind giving us the backstory behind why you chose the title for this particular release? What comes to mind when you hear it?
The song, in terms of the lyrics and the track title, were chosen and created by my cowriter and singer, Dave Wright. He brought the demo of the song to the table. I loved it and then spent four months adding the music and producing it. It was, without question, the most time-consuming track I have ever worked on, but I’m incredibly happy with the end result.
You went the tech-trance route on this one. What made you want to pursue the sound, originally?
I don’t think I ever made a conscious decision to “make tech trance.” In fact, the first records I made like “F16” and “Panic Attack” that many associate with that genre were made at a time when I don’t think the genre really existed.
At what point in your sets do you think this one will be the most effective?
That’s impossible to say—every crowd is different, and every gig is unique. It entirely depends on what is going on in front of you. Some places, it’s the perfect track to end on; other times, it’s better to play it in the middle. You have to play these things by ear, read the crowd, and then give it to them when it’s most needed/appropriate.
Staying versatile is something you’ve done better than most. How do you decide on the direction of each tune when you open up a project file and get to work?
I like a variety of different music—from big vocal records that grab you, warm you on the inside and make you think, due to their thought-provoking lyrics—but then I also adore the raging psychedelic or tech trance that punches you in the face. I try and make an even balance of all the sounds I’m into. While “Vapour Trails” is the new big vocal track, my next single, which is out in January on VII, is a full-on chainsaw of a tech-meets-psy weapon.
With each new dawn, new sounds, new ideas and new visions are born. And today Simon Patterson spearheads
