Way Out West

Conspicuous from the rest of Bristol’s electronica scene in the ’90s by the absence of trip-hop or jungle leanings in their productions, Way Out West instead pursued straight-ahead house and trance with closer ties to progressive British dancefloors than American hip-hop. The duo of Jody Wisternoff and Nick Warren first came together in the mid-’90s. Wisternoff was a veteran producer who had first recorded at the age of 14 (with fellow Bristolian house artists Smith & Mighty), while Warren was a high-profile Balearic DJ and club-night promoter influenced by the sounds of Madchester.

The duo began recording together, and by 1996 their single “The Gift” had become a big mover on dancefloors and the radio as well, thanks to a British advert that used the song. Signed to Deconstruction, Way Out West released their self-titled debut album in 1997. A change of venue, to Distinct’ive, preceded the release of 2001’s Intensify, and after a three-year interim the duo followed that with the like-minded Don’t Look Now. With Warren meanwhile releasing numerous mix compilations, many of them for Global Underground, Way Out West returned in 2009 with We Love Machine. Featuring contributors such as Scuba, Jaytech, and D. Ramirez, We Love Machine: The Remixes followed on Hope Recordings a year later. Wisternoff released the solo album Trails We Blaze on Anjunadeep in 2012 and went on to mix several installments of the label’s popular compilation series.

Anjunadeep also issued the Way Out West singles “Tuesday Maybe” and “Set My Mind” in 2016. With guest appearances by Doe Paoro and Liu Bei, the duo’s fifth LP, Tuesday Maybe, arrived in June 2017 and was accompanied by a performance at the Glastonbury Festival. Since then, the band have embarked on a UK tour, released their Tuesday Maybe (Remixed) album, and prepared a legion of new music to release throughout 2018 – and, with more new projects in the pipeline for the next year, it’s safe to say that there’s never been a more exciting time to be a Way Out West fan.

    • Andrew Bayer Announces Double Album ‘Duality’ andrew-duality-album-feature-oz-edm-2022

Andrew Bayer introduces ‘Duality’, a brand new double album. Two musical threads weave through the collected works of Andrew Bayer. One thread gave us the downtempo masterclass of 2013’s ‘If It Were You We’d Never Leave’ and the brilliant ‘In My Last Life’ LP. The other thread produced arena-sized anthems like 2014’s ‘Once Lydian’, his epic ‘Super Human’ with Asbjørn, and the club remix project ‘In My Next Life’. From the introspective to the explosive, these records are our community’s shared soundtrack: we’ve all got a favorite Andrew Bayer record. But they have come in so many forms and styles. It leaves us asking the question, who exactly is Andrew Bayer? It’s a question he’s asked himself. “Since day one, I have always struggled with how to present myself. I love making these experimental home listening albums of electronica and indie sounds, but I also love DJing and making trance bangers. On my last album, I had to remix the album in full after it was released to make the worlds fit. This time around I wanted to capture all the breadth, depth, and tension within that duality under one single project” – Andrew Bayer ‘Duality’ brings these two creative threads together under one album for the first time since his debut album ‘It’s Artificial’. Crafted over three years, Andrew Bayer is joined by an eclectic cast of collaborators old and new. ‘Duality’ pt. 1 explores Bayer’s passion for downtempo and indie-pop, while ‘Duality’ pt. 2 takes on his forward-thinking trance and progressive sound. Both are tied by Bayer’s unique vision, a shared sensibility, and the same group of collaborators. Today, you can hear a sample from each side: ‘Equal’ (with Asbjørn), and ‘Midnight’ (with Alison May). ‘Duality’ is the true follow-up to my first album ‘It’s Artificial’. It is by far my most raw and honest work, and I can’t wait to celebrate the album around the world with you all on tour” – Andrew Bayer ‘Duality’ pt. 1 lands on August 12, with pt. 2 following on October 28. Pre-order now available here. • Giuseppe Ottaviani Announces New Album Horizons [Part 1] horizons-part-1-giuseppe-ottaviani-oz-edm-feature

In the eyes of fans, Giuseppe Ottaviani has remained the most steadfast producer in the genre. Famed for his resolutely exacting productions, there’s been a long-held perception of him as a ‘known-quantity’. For those prepared to look deeper though, there’s always been another side to the composer, performer, and most recently – through his Masterclass production series. Giuseppe’s been a deft and artful innovator – balancing out that dependability with hidden-in-plain-sight advancements. That characteristic has now been channelled into his ‘Horizons’ project. Giuseppe’s Live 2.0 & 3.0 performances essentially turned clubs into recording studios, in turn beginning the production processes for 2019’s ‘Evolver’ album. Earlier than that even, with 2016’s ‘Alma’, his ‘Slow Emotion’ tracks had already begun playing with the idea of what Giuseppe ‘was’. In tandem, they were essentially laying the foundation blocks for ‘Horizons’. Commenting on this “modification” (as Giuseppe terms it), he observes that “change seems to have become our ‘constant’ of late. As such, I imagine that something of this nature was always going to be reflected in the ‘Horizons’ albums”. What that modification means in real terms is “music produced with less of a clubfloor focus to it. Adaptable, certainly, he suggests, but at this moment in time, not reliant upon.” Ottaviani’s most predominant shift in concentration has been in tone and song. Specifically, that’s meant utilising sounds from outside of his usual remit and a greatly increased emphasis on deeply meaningful and relatable lyrics. Indeed, ‘Horizons’ and ‘Evolver’ hold their own unique symbiosis: ‘Evolver’ being purely instrumental, while ‘Horizons [Part 1]’ is vocal-detailed near enough throughout. That, to no small degree, was due to the prevailing circumstances. Clubs were closed, but singers and songwriters were anything but. This allowed Giuseppe all the time necessary to pinpoint the voices that would work best with the music he was producing and rally them to its cause. With the artistic taps wide-open, ‘Horizons’ productions became an outpour. To such a degree in fact, that it quickly spilled the banks of the conventional album and was divided, naturally enough, into two. Through its advance-word singles, ‘Horizons [Part 1]’ has already outlined a cooler, deeper, more mindful tone to fans. That – often for the first time – has brought voices well known in other electronic music quarters to trance’s door. Among them have been songstresses like Monika Santucci, April Bender, Mila Josef and Natalie Shay. Giuseppe also draws on deeper tones from vocalists like Jan Burton and Dan Soleil, all of who collectively shape the unique sound of ‘Horizons [Part 1]’. At every opportunity, Giuseppe gently underscores that the two volumes of ‘Horizons’ don’t necessarily represent a permanent change. It’s a vocal yin to ‘Evolver’s instrumental yang, a sonic amendment that chimes more with our current times and an reflection of an artist more adept at adapting than conventional wisdom suggests. Turning to face summer 2022, the first part of ‘Horizons’ – Giuseppe Ottaviani’s new album project, is released on May 20. You can pre-order or save it via this link from today. • MaRLo & Achilles Join Forces For ‘Nothing Is Left’ marlo-nothing-is-left-feature-oz-edm

After being premiered together on stage at MaRLo’s Melbourne Altitude show – ‘Nothing Is Left’ has arrived. Hot off the heels of chart topping hits including ‘This Way’ and ‘This Way,’ MaRLo join forces with Achilles a banging new record with elements of trance and techno that create a stellar production that is sure to stand out in both acts’ discographies. Played by Armin van Buuren in his A State Of Trance radio show, fans noted the track as a stand out of the show. ‘Nothing Is Left’ should be a blueprint for what a tech trance record should sound like. With massive drops, engaging melodies and vibrant sounds – the track is pretty much perfect. The record also showcases sounds and elements from each collaborator, as MaRLo’s signature trance sound is felt during the drop and Achilles’ hard hitting production is a constant throughout the track. Achilles’ is a new talent coming out of Melbourne and has quickly seen support from the likes of Tiesto, W&W, MORTEN, Will Sparks and plenty of other heavyweights. • Golden Features Returns With News Single ‘Touch’ golden-features-touch-2022-oz-edm

The wait is over! Acclaimed Australian electronic producer Golden Features today makes his highly anticipated return with his rousing new single “Touch” featuring Rromarin. Golden Features has turned out to be an apt name for the artist born Tom Stell, a nod to the gold mask he wears while performing. “Touch” marks the first taste of new music from Stell’s Golden Features, after a literal golden run since bursting onto the scene in 2014. Since his 2018 debut album SECT and the launch of 2020’s collaborative project BRONSON (with ODESZA), Stell felt creatively spent and needed time to recoup. Instead of opting for the traditional R&R approach, Stell emersed himself deep into clubbing mecca of the world, Berlin. There, he lost himself in the city’s renowned techno bunkers and hedonistic clubs, dancing with strangers, stripped of phones and returning to the apartment in the early hours to hunt for the tracks he’d heard the night before. Four nights a week spent raving only came to an end when COVID closed the clubs down. But Stell returned to Australia revitalised and most importantly, inspired. “Touch” encapsulates everything Stell took away from his invigorating stint in Berlin. A track that’s both moody and light, layered with pulsating rhythm, hypnotic beats and the duelling deep and wispy vocals of Rromarin. “Touch was born from that synth riff. I fought it for so long, feeling it was too happy and upbeat. After giving it some space I reharmonized everything under the riff and it instantly made me feel something. Claire (Rromarin) had actually recorded these vocals for another song on the record, but the lyrics just felt right for Touch” says Stell on the new single. “To me it encapsulates that feeling after the rave… At the kick-on laying with your head in somebody’s lap, smoking a cigarette while they play with your hair.” Now with two platinum and six gold ARIA certifications for his tracks, 275+ million global streams, an acclaimed and beloved debut album in 2018’s SECT (#1 ARIA Dance Albums Chart, #1 iTunes, Triple J’s Feature Album), selling out two shows in 4 hours at the Sydney opera House, headline slots at major festivals both at home and abroad as well as forming the BRONSON project and releasing their self-titled album with stadium-conquering US electronic duo ODESZA under his belt, Golden Features has cemented himself as Australian electronic music royalty, returning now as an artist at the top of their game. Stay tuned for more to come from Golden Features, in the meantime listen to the new single “Touch” below!

He was a finalist in the Unearthed DIY Supergroup competition and also made his triple j Like A Version debut, delivering a stellar rework of Toto’s ‘Africa’, alongside a mashup of ‘CEO’ and ‘Jungle Juice’ with the help of KLP. Dave was also handpicked to remix Darude’s ubiquitous classic ‘Sandstorm’ for a major Christmas TV campaign. Over his career Dave has collaborated with the legendary Armin Van Buuren on ´The Race´, and produced official remixes for Twenty One Pilots, David Guetta, Bastille, Anne-Marie, Clean Bandit, Hardwell, Axwell /\ Ingrosso, Adam Lambert, and Galantis, proving himself to be one of Australia’s most prolific electronic acts, racking up over 65 million streams on Spotify alone. • Wongo Unleashes New Hit ‘The Preacher’ the-preacher-wongo-oz-edm

Wongo Helps Us See The Light With ‘The Preacher’ Featuring The Legendary Chuck Roberts. DJ, producer, former professional breakdancer and full-time funny man Wongo is ready to show us the light with his new single ‘The Preacher’. Featuring the legendary ‘voice of house music’ Chuck Roberts delivering a sermon-like vocal, ‘The Preacher’ encourages everyone to harness the power of love over adversity, delivered in a heater of a house track, with a sample from jazz artist Bob James. “Bob James is probably my favourite composer of all time by a long shot,” explains Wongo. “His ‘Shamboozie’ record had a huge effect on me from my b-boy days, so being able to sample one of his hits is a big deal for me! On top of that, having the lord Chuck Roberts on vocals… I’m done haha. Proper nostalgia vibes!” With a monthly radio show on Insomniac Radio in the US, numerous ARIA Club Chart #1s, sold-out tours, support from Mixmag, Billboard, Complex, Don Diablo, Claptone and Zeds Dead, amongst many more, Wongo is a force to be reckoned with. His most recent single ‘Apple’ hit #1 on the ARIA Club Chart, reached the top 20 of both the Shazam and Spotify Viral chart in Australia, and hit the most played spot on triple j, becoming the biggest club record in the country. Added to this, in 2020 Wongo launched his Need2Freak parties alongside Little Fritter, selling 3,000 tickets and calling on his mate FISHER to do a surprise B2B set. Need2Freek also hosted a stage at Grass Is Greener festival in Cairns in late 2021. In a scene dominated by DJs and producers, it is hard to believe that the most definitive moment in the birth of house music came not from beats, chords or vocals, but a sermon. The House Music Gospel or The Preacher’s Anthem are just a few of the descriptions anyone with even a passing interest in the genre will no doubt have heard in the impassioned intonation of “In The Beginning There was Jack, and Jack had a groove”, the opening line of Chuck Roberts’ soul stirring speech, a performance that was first heard in Rhythm Controll’s seminal 1987 track ‘My House’. Later resampled by Larry Heard, AKA Mr Fingers for ‘Can You Feel It’, often cited as the first deep house record ever released. As well as sampled on well over 120 various recordings. Roberts’ new sermon in ‘The Preacher’ once again delivers a soul-stirring message, letting people know that even in the face of adversity “what you need to know and understand and what you need to be able to stand on is this… there is a way out.” Wongo’s ‘The Preacher’ is primed for all b-boys and girls to get back on the dancefloor and know “the thing inside of us that can conquer any obstacle that’s placed in our way… this my friend is love.” Wongo’s latest hit, ‘The Preacher’ featuring Chuck Roberts is out now, get your first listen below!
