Having finished 2019 with a Feature Artist nod on triple j Unearthed and a triple j addition for his track ‘Smoke Machine’, Dave Winnel has kept his cache of releases flowing into 2020. This Friday, the Australian producer releases his latest banger ‘Boomerang’, with lyrics speaking of that unrequited love you can’t quite shake and who keeps coming back like a boomerang.
“Boomerang is one of my most diverse and fun records to date,” says Winnel. “I´ve always stayed away from the ´cookie cutter´ approach to making my music and ´Boomerang´ pushes my arsenal even wider into uncharted territories.”
The release of ‘Boomerang’ is accompanied by a DIY video made by Dave himself while he’s been in lockdown in his hometown of Sydney. “I knew I wanted to make a music video in ISO; filming the whole thing at home with no budget. I was listening to the song on repeat and listening to the lyrics “Boomerang, why can’t I throw you away, keep coming back every day”. Due to terrible acting on my behalf and limited budget and tools in ISO I thought I’d use my plush toy crocodile (named CROQ) and have him be stalked by a banana who keeps coming back. My girlfriend, (prop specialist and co-director) suggested attaching the fishing wire to control the props like puppets. We filmed the whole thing in an afternoon at home. Editing and adding the Michael Bay level effects took a day’s worth of work.”
As the 38th most played artist globally on 1001tracklists last year, and the number two Aussie on the list (only behind FISHER), Dave Winnel is going from strength to strength following the success of his Beatport #1 hit ‘Smoke Machine’. He´s collaborated with the legendary Armin Van Buuren on ‘The Race’, and produced official remixes for Twenty One Pilots, David Guetta, Bastille, Anne-Marie, Clean Bandit, Hardwell, Axwell /\ Ingrosso, Adam Lambert and Galantis, proving himself to be one of the most prolific up and coming electronic producers.
In 2019 Dave released his first ever vinyl pressed EP, ´Lily Of The Vinyl´ which went on to garner more that 3 million streams on Spotify soon after. His previous single, ‘Always Feels Like´, was signed to Dutch label Future House Music and Virgin EMI and has clocked up over 13.5 million streams on Spotify alone.
Playing festivals like Tomorrowland and Stereosonic, Dave is conquering the world performing in Japan, France, Bali, Philippines, Hong Kong, Macau, Sweden, Croatia and the Netherlands. The down-to-earth Aussie producer is known for his infectious and fun personality and this shines through his music, blending future/tech house with organic quirky sounding melodies.
