Ryan Dickinson and Ultan Burke have been knocking out house heaters as Otosan on the regular from the moment they stepped into the spotlight. The pair’s sound is already unmistakable, combining classic house grooves with modern vocal hooks that cross over from dancefloors to radio. Now Otosan have teamed up with Gold Coast pop sensation DOOLIE for their new slice of dance floor magic, ‘When You Go’.
Otosan explain, “We had been wanting to work on a track with DOOLIE for quite some time now as we knew our sounds would complement each other really well. Finally our schedules and locations lined up to get a day in the studio together so we jumped at the chance. For our originals we have always tried to find a balance between solid dance production and great vocal hooks and shorter song structures to give the tracks more longevity for listeners beyond just the dancefloor. This one came together very quickly, with the chords laid down only a couple of days before the session with DOOLIE, and all vocals written and recorded with her in half a day. Fast forward a few rounds of production, mixing and mastering with a few of our favourite collaborators and we absolutely love the final result.”
DOOLIE adds, “To me this song is about realising how much you’ve grown to rely on a person for your happiness and love. When writing the lyrics we really wanted the track to emulate the emotions of initial fear, and then disappointment within yourself when you make that realisation. Working with the guys, we were able to pinpoint that through the production, and have it take you through those intense waves of emotion.”
Having only teamed up as a duo in the past three years, Otosan have had a flying start. Their debut single ‘Do You Feel It’ came out in 2018 and was immediately added to a swag of big playlists, racking up over 2 million streams on Spotify. Fast forward to 2020 and their single ‘Feel So Right’, a collaboration with bass house aficionado Marten Horger, was released on Tiesto’s Musical Freedom label which immediately gained DJ support from a range of heavy hitters including Diplo, Dillon Francis and David Guetta. 2020 release ‘Nowhere’ featuring Julia Lostrom saw massive support across triple j unearthed and garnered upwards of 1 million streams on Spotify. The duo also received the New Music Single grant from NZ On Air, allowing the guys to bring the track to life with a music video from Australian Director Harvey Hayes, featuring World Champion krump dancer Ken Vaega. Otosan’s most recent release, the Shadow Child collab ‘Right Here’ continued Otosan’s rise internationally, picking up support from UK radio including Capital Dance, Kiss FM and BBC Radio 1.
Since establishing her career at the age of 17, DOOLIE has proven to be a great songwriter, powerful performer and an obvious talent with a bright future. Lending her pitch-perfect vocals to producer LO’99 for summer dance anthem, ‘Stay High’, the track reached #1 on the ARIA Club Chart. Having connected with a tight crew of notable producers including Kilter, Moonbase, GXNXVS, Cam Nacson, Paces, and POOLCLVB her debut album ‘hope u like my mixtape’ is a spotlight on a collection of artist-defining singles. To top off a highly productive year, DOOLIE has just been announced as a finalist in the Gold Coast Music Awards, nominated for Breakout Artist of the Year, and also Release of the Year for her album.
